Achieve a healthier level of absence with MyWebWorkplace

The issue of absence management within the NHS has been highlighted in recent months, following the November publication of Dr Steven Boorman’s NHS Health and Wellbeing Final Report. The release of MyWebWorkplace, the fully-hosted online absence management tool, couldn’t have come at a more helpful time.

The figures revealed by the Report are alarming: the NHS loses 10.3m working days annually due to sickness absence, at a cost of £1.7bn. The Report stresses that staff health and general wellbeing are as much about mental and social wellbeing as physical health. Organisations that place emphasis on staff health and contentment perform better, retain staff longer, have a lower average of sick days per employee, and improve patient satisfaction levels. In fact Dr Boorman believes the NHS can reduce sickness rates by a third. That’s an additional 33.4m working days a year; the equivalent of almost 15,000 full-time staff full-time, worth around £555m.

Of course, no single measure can deliver this turnaround; the Report makes a series of recommendations. Amongst them are staff engagement and the routine collation of sickness level reports for analysis. And that’s where MyWebWorkplace steps in.

At its simplest, staff engagement means making staff feel involved and taking ownership of their unplanned absences. They need to be kept informed. Accountability in all directions is crucial to raising morale. MyWebWorkplace provides that accountability. An employee can log in at any time to notify sickness, check how much sick leave has been taken, and to request time off.

In fact the system follows the traditional process of sickness notification and holiday request forms but with none of the paper-based system’s shortcomings. At a time when transparency is important particularly in cancelling out actual and perceived discrimination, MyWebWorkplace allows total visibility of process; it’s based on proactive internal case management between team and leader that better supports individuals and reduces costs by returning employees to work as soon as is appropriate.

Completely configurable by staff grade, department and more, MyWebWorkplace provides management and HR with an at-a-glance insight into an entire facility’s staffing. Shared calendars and detailed reports allow line managers to make informed and strategic decisions, while senior management and HR can identify trends and generate detailed reports. By adding in an organisation’s policies, problem staff or departments are highlighted, allowing issues to be addressed at the earliest stage by progressing the sickness to a management review within MyWebWorkplace.

MyWebWorkplace automates, streamlines and speeds up a process that can be needlessly drawn out; frees up the staff involved to get back to work that really matters; reduces carbon footprint; and informs and empowers an entire workforce; all at a remarkably affordable price.
